Testimonial from South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare, May 2011

"John has been engaged as a Project Manager within the Children's Directorate of South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare Foundation NHS Trust since October 2010. I have worked with him during this time as a clinician and in my role as Clinical Lead for Community Paediatrics.

The project John has managed is complex, involving reorganising and redesigning the delivery of Community Paediatric services over the while of South Staffordshire.

On coming into post, John lost no time in meeting with a wide range of managers, clinicians and administrative staff, and consequently rapidly gained an understanding of present services and of the scope of the project. He proved to be an excellent listener. He also as a good understanding of the broader NHS Context; and challenges such as changes in commissioning and cost improvement imperatives.

Despite the predictable resistance to change on the part of some staff, John has been able to secure engagement with the project from each of the five disparate paediatric teams through which services have been delivered to date. This has been demonstrated by considerable 'people skills', which were particularly evident during meetings attended by people with very different personal agendas and strong feelings regarding the service. John has been able to keep meetings focussed on the agenda, to deal with emotions and concerns expressed in a sensitive manner, to ensure everyone feels included and has their say, and still to end meetings on time having moved the project forward.

Having scoped the project and engaged staff in the process, John was able to produce a clear set of alternative service options for consideration, backed up with implications which could be understood by all. He is able to stimulate creative thought in others and to translate clinical aspirations into business plans. He encourages resistors to come to their own understanding of the need for change.

John's project management skills have been evident in the professional manner in which he has steered the process, enabling others to see the core issues clearly despite the complexity of the content and to take ownership of the decisions made and their consequences. He does not breed dependency on the project manager, but creates the context in which others can find their own solutions for problems.

Our paediatric review is not yet complete but the project is progressing to time, and I have every confidence that John will leave us with a service fit for purpose and with processes which enable us to deal with the challenges inherent in any redesign.

I would be happy to work with John again, and have no hesitation in recommending him as a project manager."

Testimonial from Child Development Services, Tamworth, July 2011

"I have worked with John since October 2010, while he has undertaken the role of Project Manager to carry out a review of Community Paediatric Services within the Children’s Directorate of South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare Foundation Trust.

I am a Community Paediatrics Specialist Nurse and Team Leader for one of five Child Development Centres. I have therefore worked very closely with John throughout the Paediatric Review.

The five Child Development Centres are geographically widespread which therefore presents one of the largest difficulties when addressing any change. John visited all Team Leaders at each Child Development Centre within the first few weeks on commencing his role. This immediate staff engagement was very positive. John led a team of staff which formed a project group to lead the initial plans for the review. John also initiated several away days, the first quite close to the commencement of the review. This whole staff engagement allowed staff to feel informed and more importantly listened to, which is imperative for any change to come to fruition.

During this time John has shown great ability to manage people and their differing personalities and their resistance to change. The away days were for all staff and therefore had all groups of professionals attending. At times it can be difficult to manage the views of from particular groups of professionals at any one time. John managed all staff, some with very strong personalities and agendas with great ease and exceptional professionalism.

Added to this John has used a range of tools i.e. question and answer time at the end of each session. This has enabled the session to become manageable, allowing each group of professionals to raise their concern. If the question could not be answered it allowed John or the Service Manager to come back at a later date.

Several score sheets which were also used which allow visual outcomes for staff to see. Data collection of business was also formulated which again presented in a visual format helped staff address the need for change.

Our service provides highly individualised care for children with very complex needs. It can be extremely challenging to predict professional time and plan future working. John has enabled us to plan this way by tediously counting all contacts on our caseload and accounting time spent on each activity. We have never before achieved these figures which can predict to commissioners our input for families, children and future referrals.

John works immediately on any data collection/information gathering exercise and produces clear visual diagrams, tables, graphs etc of the results. This I would expect from a professional employed in the business capacity. However, John’s innovative methods of engaging people and providing information in such a timely manner is an outstanding achievement given the geographical difficulties and the resistance some staff have given to service redesign.

John’s management skills throughout the project have been excellent. I have enjoyed working with John and would highly recommend John in any future project management posts."

Testimonial from Child Development Service, Burton on Trent, July 2011

"I have known John for over 6 months ever since he was appointed to facilitate a review of the Trust’s Paediatric Services.

I found John to be very methodical in his approach and professional in his attitude. His style of consultation with stakeholders was very inclusive. He is a diligent worker and completed a complex piece of work on schedule, with a sense of humour.

I would not hesitate to recommend John for a similar position in future."

Yours sincerely
